How To Sell On Ebay: The Money Is In The Back-End

Isaiah Hull

How To Sell On Ebay: The Money Is In The Back-End

Many people who sell on Ebay completely neglect the
follow-up process. They post an auction. Someone wins.
They send an automated message to the winner. They ship
the item. End of story. End of buyer-seller relationship.

. . .end of customer's total worth to the business
--and this is why so many people who sell on Ebay
fail or make negligible profits: they have no idea
that the real money is actually in back-end and
follow-up sales.

In this article, I am going to go over one of the
tools you can use to make follow-up sales on
Ebay: autoresponders.

Autoresponders will allow you to automate the
follow-up and upselling process. You can subscribe
to an autoresponding service through a number of
different companies. Most will give you a free
trial that limits your abilities, but lasts indefinitely.

Getresponse (getresponse.com) is one of these
companies. It has a user-friendly control panel,
excellent customer service, and offers a free trial
version that will give you access to everything
you need for early upselling and follow-up.

You can use your autoresponder a number of different
ways to make follow-up sales, but you must start by
collecting names to load into your autoresponder.

You can do this by asking customers (after you've
made a sale) if they would like to join your mailing
list and receive special offers, discounts, and the
chance to buy items before they go on auction. Load
the names and email addresses of the people who respond
positively into your autoresponder.

Getresponse will send them a confirmation message.
The rest is up to you.

Come up with special offers, discounts, and
contests and send them out via broadcast to your
subscribers on a regular basis, but not too often.

Your customers have already a) purchased from you
and b) agreed to receive special offers. From here,
it shouldn't be too hard to get follow-up sales.
They are already hooked--just give them a good offer.

For instance, you could send out special offers for
complementary products at certain intervals. You could
target people who purchased digital cameras and offer
them sticks of memory at a discounted price, but only
if they buy within a certain amount of days after the
close of the auction. You could do the same thing with
camera bags--and also set a specific date.

If you sell jewelry, you could offer customers a matching
set of earrings for a necklace at a discount. Or cleaning
tools. Or a jewelry box.

There are a number of different ways in which you can
structure your Ebay post-sales follow-up with your
autoresponder. There are only two real rules you
should follow:

1) Do not, under any circumstances, add people to your
list who did not specifically ask to be added to it.
It is illegal and unethical, and it could land you
in jail; and

2) Make sure you are targeting the right people with
the right follow-up pitch. If you're trying to sell
discount plastic dinosaurs to someone who just
bought a case of motor oil, you probably wont get
the response you want.

. . .other than that, it is completely up to you.
Come up with some creative ideas; put them to work;
and you can easily double or triple the lifetime
worth of each customer who shops at your Ebay store.

Precious Stones V.S. Semi-Precious Stones

Sam Serio

Stones have been worn by both women and men since prehistoric times. Just as in the jewelry of modern times, beautiful stones, rare and colorful, are most often the dominant feature of a piece with a metallic setting for ornamentation.

The stones used in the crafting of fine jewelry are generally divided into two classes- precious stones and semi-precious stones.

These terms are used heavily in the commercial world of jewelry when considering variety and value. While artistic merits are only a matter of opinion, the value of a stone is what it will bring in the marketplace. It should also be mentioned that many people, collectors and general consumers alike, prefer the rare to the beautiful.

These stones are simply rocks (minerals) taken from the earth, and after they have been enhanced by the artisans cutting and polishing, the finest and rarest of them are what we call gems.

Precious Stones

The most precious stones are the diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires. The pearl is oftentimes classed with precious stones. Although strictly speaking while it is not a stone it holds an esteemed place in jewelry.

Semi-Precious Stones

A large number of stones used in jewelry are known as semi-precious; the most important ones are as follow: amethyst, lapis-lazuli, turquoise, aquamarine, topaz, moonstone, peridot, opal, tourmaline, zircon, chrysoberyl, alexandrite. Others of less importance although much used are: chrysoprase, jade, garnet, agate, azurite, malachite, bloodstone, coral, carnelian and many others. These stones while comparatively common and inexpensive are indispensable to the worker in jewelry. The variety of colors to be had in these stones make it possible to produce unusual designs of artistic merit and to adapt them to the personality and costume of the wearer. For more detailed information regarding gem stones the reader is referred to "Gem Stones" by G.F. Herbert Smith, also "The Curious Lore of Precious Stones," by George Frederick Kunz.

Staying Professionally Chic In The Heat
Eileen Hammel

Whether you live in a warm climate year round or you are just trying to survive summer's heat till autumn's cool arrive the following quick and easy professional style tips will keep you cool and have you looking professionally chic in any heat.

Wardrobe
Select fabrics that are natural / man-made blends that consist of at least 51% natural fiber, such has a 55% cotton 45% polyester blend. This will give you the coolness of a natural fabric without the wrinkles. Choose jackets with sleeves. They are cooler than full sleeves and more professional looking than short sleeves. Light and bright colors works well in warm weather but do not use loud bold color combinations and prints. Dress in layers to adjust to the high heat outside / air conditioning inside temperature changes you will experience. A sleeve jacket over a sleeveless shell or a summer twin set is are excellent solutions for temperature changes. A cool alternative to pantyhose are thigh - highs they allow air to circulate better then pantyhose and will keep you cooler. Wear slightly larger jewelry it will give you a more polished look. Instead of a simple pendant on a chain try a triple strand of pearls. Avoid plunging necklines, extremely short hemlines, sheer fabrics, cloth handbags and briefcases, open toe shoes, sandals and flip flops.

Make - Up
Opt for a lighter make-up routine. Heavy make-up in high heat can clog pores and lead to breakouts. Before applying your makeup rub an ice cube over your face. It will help makeup last longer and prevent smudging. Use waterproof cosmetics. After applying your makeup brush your face with face powder it will set your makeup and prevent shine.

Hair
Wear your hair in a simple flattering yet professional style. Hair grows faster in warmer months so be sure to have your hair trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks. With hot weather comes limp and frizzy hair. To correct this problem use only hair products designed specifically to treat your hair type and problem. If you pull your hair back be sure to use only quality accessories. Avoid using plastic clips and rubber bands they will detract from your professional image

Successful Online Gift Shop Marketing - Part 1
Shannan Hearne Fortner

With all the great wholesale companies available, virtually anyone can
through up a WWW shingle and start a gift shop. Additionally, there are
thousands of wonderful gift shops online specializing in everything from
apple art to zebra prints. How do you compete with your online gift
shop?

Success Promotions has spent five years building successful internet
businesses and we'd like to share some valuable information with you.
Not every online business can afford a full time internet marketing
employee or an outsourced internet marketing service.

If you go to any search engine and search for gifts you will get
thousands and thousands of returns. For example, a search run on
AltaVista.com today for the search string "gifts" returned 12,332,556
results. After narrowing the search by adding "women's" to the search
string AltaVista returned 12,499,266 results. Incidentally, this search
returned so many jewelry sites in the first results that if you sell
women's gifts and they aren't jewelry you need to choose your keywords
very carefully. Needless to say, the sites not in the first 20 to 30
results aren't getting a tremendous amount of traffic from
AltaVista.com.

Here are some tips for internet marketers and gift sellers alike to help
build a more successful online business.

1. Specialize and Categorize

If you are selling two gifts or 3000 gifts you need to manage them in
categories. Think about it. Would you be able to find anything at
Walmart if they mixed the shoes with the electronics with the crafts
with the hardware? You'd walk around aimlessly for hours searching for
a pair of size six sandles with salmon colored strings. Don't make your
site visitors and potential customers search aimlessly around your site.

It helps to have a search option, but for this to work you must keyword
each product under every imaginable search word. Shoes alone wouldn't
work for sandles. You'd need to also have it pop up under footwear,
summer wear, women's attire, etc.

Furthermore, once you begin to break your gift site down into smaller,
more manageable categories, you can market EACH page to the search
engines under different keywords. Its great if every single item you
sell can be managed under a keyword or category from your main doorway
page. But why not create a sub-category doorway page for each product
category and each product line? Then you can submit all doorway/front
pages to the search engines and instead of appearing as search return
#1,456,825 you can be in the top ten for shoes, and footwear, and socks,
and sandles, and gifts, etc.

Lynn Korff, of Korff's Ceramic Originals, http://www.korfforiginals.com
knows this works. Her products vary from ceramic piggy banks to dinner
ware to candle holders. She breaks them down not only by product but
also by glaze patterns. Shoppers can readily find anything and then
find matching products making her site more shopper friendly and more
marketable. If you don't believe me, go to any search engine and search
for "ceramic piggy banks". Lynn is always right up there at the top.

Additionally, besides being more search engine friendly and successful,
your site can also be more shopper friendly. How many times have you
followed links for search engine returns that required you to go through
far too many multiple pages to find the search engine return you were
actually looking for? How many times did you stop searching the
particular site before you got to the object of your search?

Don't fret if this sounds like a major site re-design. The improvement
in marketability and shopability is worth every second of work.

There is no limit to the amount of products you can sell. But make them
easy to find and you will sell a lot more of each one.

2. Advertise

No surprise to find this one, huh? If you don't advertise, you don't
sell anything. People don't knock on your front door to see if you
might possibly have free puppies unless there is a sign. Don't expect
web site visitors to knock on your front URL to see if you maybe have
the exact gift item they are looking for just because you sell gifts.

You can advertise on other gift sites that market to similar niches
without selling the same products. You can advertise in online and
offline publications. You can advertise on any imaginable site that
caters to the same people you are catering to. Going back to the free
puppies analogy, suppose that you sell embroidered puppy collars.
Wouldn't a site run by the Humane Society also cater to people with
puppies? Wouldn't they be happy to swap links if you could help drive a
few puppy shopping families to their web site?

Where all you could advertise depends entireally on what you sell and
who you are attempting to sell it to. But be creative. Go to any
search engine and do a search on some of your own keywords. See if
there are special interest groups, clubs, or other organizations who
comprise of members who are your potential customers. If you sell
sportswear, start hitting little leaguers, co-ed leaguers, etc. As fast
as the internet is growing, and as many new users as appear online every
day, you should never, ever stop looking for new places to reach
potential customers. While you are advertising, remember to keep your
message simple and specialized. Don't just create a big banner that
says "gifts" in eight flashing colors. Tell potential visitors what
type of gifts you offer. We all have to have traffic to sell, but the
wrong traffic doesn't create sales.

Rose Clark of the Cabot Mall, http://www.cabotmall.com helps all her
mall merchants do this. She offers free ezine advertising to each of
her merchants, generating more traffic and brand name awareness for each
of them. Additionally, Rose's mall does a superb job of categorizing.

3. Market to your visitors

Think of all your advertising and marketing efforts on a Return On
Investment basis. It costs far more to get a customer than it does to
keep one.

You should be obtaining contact information from every one who visits
your web site. Email addresses. Phone numbers. Snail mail addresses.
Keep marketing to these people. Tell them about new products, sales,
specials, etc. Remind them why they surfed into your site in the first
place and invite them back. Contests are great ways to do this. If you
can give away one $5.00 widget a month and obtain 500 new contacts for
every widget given away, that is a high return on investment. Some of
the people who register to win your widget will buy one if they don't
win. And they will come back monthly to re-register. Especially if you
send a reminder to them to do so.

Cyndi Steinmetz of CDK Enterprises is very efficient in this
department. When you shop at her site, register for her contest, or
simply visit and supply your email address you enter her mailing list
for life. Monthly reminders from CDK tell me about new children's
gifts. And with four children in my home, scarecely a month goes by
that I'm not looking for something for them! Cyndi is always on my mind
because she reminds me to think about her regularly by sending me
emails. Her reminders of products keep me thinking of new ways to shop
with her all the time.

This is especially useful if you sell collectibles that are released and
retired on a regular basis. If you collect Beanie Babies, you want to
know when each one is retiring and make sure that you have it. If you
collect Longaberger Baskets, you want to be reminded when the Mother's
Day Basket is sold each year to be sure that you add it to your
collection.

4. Mail, mail, and mail some more

Email specifically. Email is the cheapest form of advertising known to
mankind - except for word of mouth. If you aren't sending emails to
customers, leads, contacts, etc., on a regular basis you are missing out
on a very powerful form of advertising. Its fast. Its easy. And its
free. Case in point. When Success Promotions has a small lull and is
in search of customers, I can obtain far more with far less effort by
contact past customers. They know what I do. They know it works. And
they may have been planning to start marketing with me again, but just
haven't gotten around to ordering. Susie Glennan, of The Busy Woman's
Daily Planner, http:/www.thebusywoman.com, knows this works. She
monthly sends reminders to people who haven't ordered in the past 12
months. Her products are consumed, if you will, on an annual basis.
She generates more sales by reminding customers to come back and
re-order.

Think about the life cycle of your products and do the same. Perhaps
you have a birthday product. You know one year later, the gift giver
will be shopping again. Send them an email inviting them to come back
and shop with you.

5. Plan ahead for seasonal sales

Of course Christmas applies here. But what about Valentines Day,
Easter, Channucka, Flag Day, Voting Day, and hundreds of others? If you
have gifts that apply to all occaisions generically or to specific
holidays you have to plan in advance to get your marketing message in
front of consumers at the appropriate time.

It might be hard to think about Santa Clause, cold weather, reindeer,
and jingle bells in July; but that is when you need to start planning.
Especially if you will be running special discount campaigns. Don't
wait til the last minute this year. Right now, get out your calendar
and make note of every holiday that will effect your business. Back
track anywhere from two weeks to six months in your calendar and make a
notation to begin planning and implementing campaigns for these
holidays.

6. Campaign

Politics or not, we all must group and categorize our advertising in
some manner. If you develop entire campaigns for products and
occaisions, then you are ready to roll each time with ad copy,
brochures, sales messages, etc. Don't short change yourself here. This
is where it is at for every business. And gift shops aren't any
different. If you plan to roll out six new necklaces this year, one
every two months, then you really should find some sort of campaign
method to link and organize yourself. Market them in a uniform and
pre-planned manner. And by all means, have a campaign for every new
product. Don't just clandestinely add it to your site and hope that
someone notices. Add it with a bang, and a campaign.

Choosing A Direct Sales Company

Caryn FitzGerald

Choosing a Direct Sales Company

In this hustle and bustle world of direct sales the goal remains the same. How do I build my business successfully and make enough to achieve what I have set forth to do? Many have a mentor or someone in their company who helps them along by offering training and direction, however who trains the trainer? Most direct sales companies have a training manual and offer "support" at the home office, but is this really working? How many times have you seen an email from someone who has "retired" from one company only to join another. How does a person really choose which direct sales company is for them? Is it the product? the company name? the price of the products offered? commission structure? Believe it or not, there is a method to choosing which company is right for you. It's the same method that one would take when deciding if a neighborhood is where they want to live or if a certain car is the one they want to drive. It's called taking the time to research the company and talk with others involved. Make informed decisions, don't jump because a consultant does an amazing presentation at an event and you want part of it. That is the role of a good consultant, to make you desire more. Before choosing a direct sales company, here are a few questions to ask yourself and others:

1. What do I think of the products? Not just the ones I bought today, but the ones I have been using for weeks, months or years? Obviously if you are using the products for months or years than it is probably safe to say you are enjoying the products.

2. What is the price range of these products? Do I know people (as we always start with selling to those we know) that can and will want to purchase these products?

3. How often will the products need to be reordered? Will I have returning customers each month because the products are consumable? (make-up, food, cards are examples of consumable products), (jewelry, books, clothing are non-consumables).

4. What is the discount or commission structure? Do I have minimums or quotas each month? What do I have to do to receive my monthly discount or bonus check?

5. Is there a yearly renewal fee for my membership? If so, how much?

6. How can I advertise this business? Many companies are not internet friendly and therefore if you plan to advertise on the internet you may be at a serious disadvantage by not being able to have a website with products on it. However if you are not planning to advertise on the internet, then this issue does not need to be a large concern when making the decision. Ask about use of the company name - can you put a link in your email, sign on your car? Think about what you plan to do and ask if this is something you can do with this particular company.

7. Talk with other representatives and not only the ones in your local area. Ask friends and family members if they know of the products and if so, what do they know. You may find information that will help you in making a more informed decision.

8. Ask yourself how much do I want to invest in this business? Even though you are working for yourself, this is still a business and you are the business owner, self promotion is key. There is work involved. You will have to decide how much time you want to spend at events, home parties, expos, marketing your business to others and of course, how comfortable are you on the phone? Telephone skills are very important in direct sales. Following up with customers and potential customers is crucial. Keep in touch with those you have met. Just say hello, a friendly reminder that you are there is sometimes all it takes to receive a new order from someone you may have met at an event. Make sure you are available, answering machines are a must in this day and age. No one likes to call somewhere and receive a busy signal or get no answer. Make sure your customers can reach you.

9. Check out the local area reps to see what goes on in terms of meetings and updates. Most companies have a policy that once a consultant reaches a certain level in the company they are required to hold meetings to pass on new information to other consultants. Find out what is in your area. Are there 3 other consultants in your area or 30,000? Having too many or too few is not necessarily a positive or negative to base a decision on, but something to give you a guideline of what type of networking environment is available to you.

10. Most importantly remember that direct sales is not the type of business where you can hang a shingle and say "okay I'm here, come buy from me." This is a very interactive tough type of business to be involved in. Depending on the area and time of year, things will slow down. The main point is that if you are happy with the products you are offering and able to communicate well with others you will succeed. Don't let slow days get you down. Remember to smile on the phone with others, talk about your products and share with everyone. Don't prejudge what the answer is going to be and therefore not talk to someone about what you have to offer. Let them know what you have to share and remind people by the constant use of your products in your home, car, office and wherever else they can be used. Talk it up and your customer base will grow. Most of all - keep a positive mental attitude and remember you can and will succeed!

IS YOUR LIFE SIGNIFICANT?
Dee Mapa

"I also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will
build My church; and the gates of Hades will not overpower it." -
Matthew 16:18 (NASU)

The words of Jesus above spoken to Peter conveyed many meanings.
They were not only an utterance of prophecy. They were meant also
to build up and to give Peter a life of significance. Peter was a
man given to impulse, a characteristic that belied an obvious
need to be esteemed.

There are many like Peter, people who desire a life of
significance. Yet, in this world of increasing materialism,
instant gratification and compromised morals, finding
significance is more like a search for the Holy Grail.

Still, living a life of significance is possible. It begins with
four thoughts we can find in the verse quoted above.

1. KNOW YOU ARE SPECIAL ("...You are Peter"). Jesus wasn't merely
reminding Peter of his name. He was, in effect, saying, "You are
somebody. In fact, you're no longer Simon the fisherman, but
Peter the rock!"

God doesn't create junk. He created you with a perfect and
eternal plan in mind that, when fulfilled, will reveal the
profound love God has for all mankind. He's given you skills,
talents and gifts so you can do your part in that divine plan.

2. KNOW YOUR PURPOSE ("...upon this rock I will build My
church"). God's divine plan is fulfilled when we realize that we
are in this world for a purpose. Certainly that purpose isn't
confined in building our own home, owning the latest car model or
wearing the most expensive jewelry.

Our purpose would definitely have something to do with other
people. Thus, we must find our purpose in serving others or
meeting their needs. A purpose that seeks to benefit others is
not only noble, it is divine.

3. KNOW YOUR WEAKNESSES ("...and the gates of Hades will not
overpower it"). What defeats divine purpose is our weaknesses,
because weaknesses tend to feed the self and cause problems (e.g.
Peter's denial of Jesus).

Yet, when we admit our weaknesses and seek to correct them, we
consequently mature and become more of a blessing to those we
serve or relate with. In turn, we also help others mature. We
must not go through life with a defeatist but a victoriuos
attitude. This means we must first conquer our weaknesses.

4. KNOW WHO GOD IS ("I also say to you..."). It was Jesus who was
addressing Peter, therefore he was trustworthy and believable.
But, more than this, he was the Son of God!

And this is the crux of the matter: It is within a relationship
with God that we can find significance in our lives. It's not
about religion; it's not about doctrines and dogma; it's not
about church and denomination.

It's about relationship. In our mundane world, we need to be able
to touch the divine. To do so is to begin to live a life of
significance.

What's Good For A Domain Name?

Richard Lowe

I have purchased a lot of domain names for many different
reasons. Sometimes the domain name is for a business purchase,
such as an ecommerce site. I have purchased many domain names
for simple personal reasons, and occasionally the purchase was
just to keep someone else from obtaining the name and abusing
it.

Personal Domain Names

There are many reasons to get a personal domain name. Sometimes
it's vanity, sometimes it's a hobby and occasionally the
purpose is more serious and purposeful. No matter what the
reason, it's important to get just the right domain name to
portray exactly the desired image. Remember, the domain name is
one of the first things seen by your visitors, and it tells a
lot about you.

Many people like to purchase their name as a .COM address. My
friend James Huggins (http://www.jameshuggins.com) has done
this, as have my wife (http://www.claudialowe.com) and myself
(http://www.richard-lowe.com). This is a a fantastic way to get
people who know you (or know of you) to your site. They simply
know your name.

If the .COM version is not available, you can check for the
other domains: .NET, .INFO, .BIZ, .ORG, .US (for US citizens)
or .WS. There are also many country codes available (.TO for
Tonga, for example), and occasionally these are available to
anyone without restriction. Other times, they are only to
citizens of those countries.

In my case, I tried to get the .COM version of my name, but
some scum domain name scavenger had purchased it. He would
happily sell it to me, he said, for the small sum of $350.
Yeah, right. I went ahead and purchased the hyphenated version
instead.

A new option which is pretty cool is the .NAME domain name.
These are intended for names only, in the format
first.last.name or last.first.name. I went ahead and purchased
the names of myself (http://richard.lowe.name) and my wife
(http://claudia.lowe.name). This makes it very easy to find our
personal web sites.

You can also purchase domain names which describe your
interests or hobbies. For example, we purchased
http://www.lowefamilychristmas.com to describe our Christmas
experiences, and http://www.claudiasrecipes.com to show off
Claudia's recipe collection.

I had an idea last year to get something special for my wife
on our anniversary (in addition to jewelry, of course - I am not
stupid). I decided to purchase some domain names for her -
http://www.iloveclaudia.com and the .NET, and .ORG versions as
well. I loaded the site with other pages and things that had
been made for her over the years. A very unique present.

Business Names

So you've been working hard on your web site making it perfect.
You've surveyed your market, analyzed their requirements,
designed and coded a killer site, and now it's time to cut it
loose on the world. It's time to do some promotion. After all,
it does not matter how good a site is if no one visits.

An important part of your promotional plan should be the
purchase of domain names. You will need at least one, as it's
considered extremely unprofessional for a business to have a
presence on the internet without one. And with domain names
available for $8.95 a year, the lack of one cannot be justified
financially.

What kind of domain name should a business acquire?

The business name (of course) - The simplest thing to do is to
simply get the name of your business as a domain name. If you
cannot get the .COM version, check for the .NET, .ORG, .BIZ or
.INFO versions. This is the domain name that would typically be
used for marketing and branding purposes.

Hyphenated business name - You can also get the hyphenated
business name, if the name is two or more words long. You
should only get this if (a) the name is not available in it's
unhyphenated version or (b) you bought the non-hyphenated
version as well. It's not a good idea to get only the
hyphenated version, as this is not something customers
normally type in URLs. It is, however, a good idea to purchase
the hyphenated version in addition to the non-hyphenated
version as sometimes people do type in the hyphens.

Keyword domain names - Another option is to purchase domain
names which are keywords which match search engine keywords.
For example, if your site sells candy, you could get the domain
name candy-chocolate-lollipops.com, candychocolatelollipops.com
or something like that. Some search engines do use keywords
within domain names to boost the ratings of a site. Some
companies like these types of domain names - personally, I
feel they are a little tacky and unprofessional.

Product Names - One possible strategy is to purchase domain
names for each different product or product classification
that you want. You could then set up separate, distinct sites
for each of these.

Product Lines - If you company sells distinctly difference
product lines, you might want to create different sites for
each of them. In this case, you will want different domain
names for each one.

Business Units - I've seen some companies which purchase a
domain name for each of their different business units.

Other Reasons

There are other reasons to purchase a domain name.

Keeping others from getting the name - Sometimes it's important
to purchase a domain name just so someone else will not get it.
In this case you might want to purchase "yourcompanysucks.com"
and variations of the same (AOL found out the hard way about
the importance of this some years ago).

Search Engine Optimization - I've heard that some people
purchase a lot of different keyword-style domain names with
the objective of linking them all together. This serves to
convince search engines link Google that the keywords in the
domain names should appear higher in the listings. This is a
gray area, as it may be considered search engine spamming.

15 Tips for Successful Packing
by: Joyce Moseley Pierce
1600 words - 65 character lines

Whether you travel for business or pleasure, frequently
or only occasionally, it seems that we basically pack the
same things every time. Here are a few tips to help simplify
the process so you don't have to stress about it every
time. Remember that most of these items can be purchased
when you get there, but you don't want to spend your
vacation money on things you already have at home, and if
you're traveling on business, you may not have time to
run to the store for something you need at an 8 am meeting.

After reading through these ideas, you might want to make
an itemized list of things you consider important to take.
Keep it in your suitcase so it will be available next
time you pack and use it as a checklist to make sure you haven't
forgotten anything. If other things come to mind while you're
traveling, update your list for next time, but be sure to
return it to your suitcase.

Rule #1 for me is to keep it light. I traveled toBrazil
for 10 days with only a carry-on rolling bag and backpack.
My husband packed a rolling bag that was big enough to
stuff a body into and it was difficult to manage when we
stayed in hotels that didn't have elevators. I don't pack more
than I can carry by myself and I try to leave a little room
for those vacation purchases. I have a nylon carry-on bag
that zips up into a small square that comes in handy for carrying
things home if I get too carried away.

1. Pajamas or gown. I have a pair of pjs I keep in my
suitcase just so I don't forget them. The reason I take
pajamas instead of a gown is that hotels are usually
cold and if I'm staying with friends or family, I want
to be able to get up and use the bathroom without having
to have a robe.

2. Underwear. Pack a pair for every day and then include
extras. If you're going to be doing activities that
require showering and changing clothes during the day, be
sure to include enough for that. Don't forget bras and
sports bras.

3. Make up and toiletries. Instead of having to remember
what to take every time, go through your beauty routine at home
and set out the things you use every day. Refill sample jars
from trial offers, or buy travel-size containers to pack
your cleansers so you don't have to pack an 8 oz. tub of
cold cream. Don't forget deodorant and shaving supplies. I
keep a razor in my bag all the time and just change the blade
when I'm leaving again. Keep your toiletry bag stocked and
leave it in your suitcase for the next trip, but be sure to
check and make sure you don't need to refill any of the containers.

4. Tooth care. Instead of buying a travel size tube of
toothpaste, when I get toward the bottom of my big tube,
I stop using it and throw it into my toiletry bag. I also
pack the floss and toothbrush the dentist gives me.

5. Feminine products. Don't forget to pack at least
enough to get you by until you can get to the store. A
urologist once told me that women seem prone to bladder
infections while they're on vacation. If you are, you
might want to pack an OTC medication that will help relieve
the pain and lessen the symptoms until you can get to a
doctor.

6. Medications. I have a separated pill box that holds
pills for a week. Usually my trips are not that long
(unfortunately!) so I'll put in what I need for each day
and use the extra slots for aspirin or other things I
might need while away. I have another pill box that I use
for my vitamins.

7. Clothes. After considering what the weather will be,
I pull clothes out and lay them on the bed. I like dark
colors because those spills aren't quite so obvious as
they are on light colors! I pack pants that will be
interchangeable with more than one shirt. In trying to pack
light, I may wear a pair of black pants more than once,
but not my shirts! If you're going to a cool climate,
remember to bring things to layer. It will take up less
room than bulkier items. It doesn't hurt to try things on
before you go, either! If you haven't worn something in
awhile, it may not fit the way you remembered.

8. Accessories. Make sure you have belts if necessary.
You should only need one belt if you've packed color
coordinated items. Keep jewelry to a minimum.

9. Shoes. Be sure your shoes are comfortable! Don't go
buy a new pair of shoes and try to break them in away from
home. I plan my wardrobe so that I only need one or two
pair of shoes. I've cut heels out of my wardrobe, and
flats go great with long skirts or pants. If you're packing
shorts, take a comfortable pair of sandals that will work
with shorts or skirts. If I'm taking tennis shoes, I try to
wear them on the plane because they take up too much room
in the suitcase. If you're going on a business trip, be sure
to polish your shoes before you pack them, and then slip them
inside a plastic grocery bag so the polish doesn't rub off on
your clothes. Don't forget to take socks or nylons that will
fit with the shoes you've chosen to take.

10. Vacation gear. Don't forget your swimsuit, cover-up and
a pair of flip-flops (we used to call them 'thongs' but now
that has an entirely different meaning!). My husband always
forgets swim trunks and I accuse him of just wanting to buy
a new pair in every city!

11. Hair products. I have short hair that can easily air dry
on its own in the summer, but I have a travel hair dryer I
carry with me if I'm staying in a hotel that doesn't provide
one in the room. I have a hair brush that always stays in my
bag. Condense big bottles of shampoo and conditioner into smaller
ones. I carry a shampoo/conditioner product with me so I only have
to use one product. If you need gel or hair spray, buy travel
sizes the first time, and then refill them from your big bottle
when it runs out.

12. Electronics. With cell phones and computers, neither are any
good to you if the batteries are dead. Be sure to take the cords
with you and remember to recharge every night. Don't forget your
camera, film and batteries. Take film mailers with you and send
it off before you leave to have a head start on the processing,
and save on those one hour prices.

13. Backpack. I always carry a backpack for things
to entertain myself on the plane or in the car. About a week
before I leave home, I pull the backpack out and as I think of
things I want to take, I throw them in and then repack it before
I leave. Seems like it's always heavy going to my destination and
lighter coming home because I'm tired and pack more of it in the suitcase.
If I have a connecting flight and am worried about my suitcase arriving
at the same time I do, I include a change of clothes and my toiletry
bag. I always carry something to read, my journal, a bottle of water
and a snack. I put all travel documents in the outside pocket so
they are easily accessible. Do NOT pack your manicure tools or
they will be taken away from you.

14. Purse. I don't carry a purse when traveling, so I condense
everything into a fanny pack and put anything else I have to
have in the backpack. If I'm carrying much cash, I use one
of those money pouches that hangs around your neck and can
be worn under your shirt. It's a good idea not to carry all
of your money in one place.

15. Maps and other. Before I visit a new place, I do some
research on the internet and get driving directions from the
airport. I pull information on that city that might be of
interest to me and my family. Be sure to include a small
sewing kit, or at least some safety pins, as well as your
basic first aid supplies.

Each trip I take becomes a challenge to me to pack even better
on the next one. I discover what's important to take and what's
not. Having your list available as you pack for each trip allows
you to pack and feel confident that you haven't forgotten anything.
Of course if you are traveling with children, you'll need to take
their needs into consideration, and that might include taking
in-laws with you to help carry everything!

The Importance of Travel for A Writer

"Don't go into the city alone," the blonde tourist warned me at the port of Belize. "They will cut off your arm for your jewelry."

This was in October 2004, when I went on a Caribbean cruise which, among other islands, stopped in the country of Belize. As I have a friend (whom I'll call Natalia) who grew up in Belize, this made me curious as to how the people actually lived.

Instead of jumping on a tour bus, I decided to get out of my comfort zone and go off the beaten path. I found a group of men standing outside the gates of the port, clamoring for customers to get into their cabs. Finally I chose the most friendly-looking man and climbed into a taxi, which was actually a jitney. On this hour-long ride around the island, I, not only felt deliciously alive, I saw Belize through Natalia's eyes.

My driver, Raoul as I'll call him, assured me that the people would treat me kindly because the island is largely supported by tourism. First, he took me to the richer side of the island. This side of town was comprised of small mansion-like homes, wrapped around by lush palms, which belonged to the prime ministers and the dignitaries. The neighborhood was sedate and quiet as all the inhabitants were at work.

Afterwards, we blundered through the back streets and alleys of Belize, and I met the everyday denizens, including the derelicts.

Looking back, in what Raoul described as the "hood" side of the island, I noticed that the largest house belonged to that of the Obeah woman. This house was chalky white and resembled a mausoleum. It stood out like the Taj Mahal in a trailer camp as it was surrounded by what can only be described as windowless hovels and wooden shacks. Suddenly I realized and appreciated how much Natalia had accomplished by coming to America from this third-world country. (Truly, Natalia had given me an accurate picture as to how underdeveloped the country was.)

But this trip also made me think. How can a writer improve his writing through traveling?

These are just some of the benefits I gained.

1.. Travel gives you a broader frame of reference from which to write.
2..You get to see how people in other parts of the world live.
3..Travel helps you learn how it feels to walk in another man's shoes.
4..Travel satisfies a writer's curiosity and can give you life-changing information.
5..Travel gives you a fresh perspective on life and expands your horizons before you close your eyes in death.

Travel helps you fill out the small details of your writing projects. These were some of the ideas that I gathered while traveling. Some will be used in future projects.

1. From my trip, I absorbed many small details, which eased their way into my novella, Second Chances, a story about renewal and resurrection in life.

2. People are basically generous. As people opened up to me, I found everyone has a story.

3. I learned about the haunted hotels in Galveston, Texas, which is an area of research I'd like to look into.

4. I learned about the flood in Galveston, Texas, which killed over 8,000 people in 1908. I'd like to research this story more.

5. On the cruise, I took classes in traveling around the world safely, which cultivated my desire to travel around the world.

6. I also took a class on feng shui, which I found to be useful as a fictional plotting tool. (Pronounced fung- schway, this is the ancient Chinese art of manipulating and arranging your surroundings to attract positive life energy, or chi, so it can flow smoothly, unblocking any obstructions in your body and environment. Feng Shui evolved from the theory that people are affected for better or worse by their surroundings.)

Most of all, since this trip, I discovered that travel not only broadens a writer's horizons, it is a lucrative way to make money as a travel writer.

As a writer, how would you like to travel the globe and find out how different cultures live? What if you could do this, stay in five-star hotels, and have an all-expense paid for trip? Moreover, what if you could get paid for writing articles about your travels? Wouldn't it be nice to supplement your income as a novelist?

Bottom line. The largest journey is the internal journey that you go on when you travel. I believe the best writing should "Tell me something I don't know." Therefore, when you travel, you will encounter the unknown.
Some resources to help you sell articles, including travel articles are the following:

1. Writer's Market -- this annual publication lists 8,000 or more (mostly North American) publications that buy articles -- travel and others.

2. Writers & Artists Yearbook -- A directory for writers, artists, playwrights, writers for film, radio, and television, designers, illustrators, and photographers. This is a good resource for British and European markets.

3. The Guardian Media Directory -- Also focuses on the British and European markets, this listing contains over 10,000 contacts, from regional newspapers to publishing houses.

3 Easy Steps to Buying the right Engagement Ring
Brandon Hopkins

3 Easy Steps to Buying the right Engagement Ring

You've made the plunge, you've decided to get married. Congratulations!

Don't think about it now, but there are many things you need to think about before the big day comes, and one of them is how are you going to find the right engagement ring?

Before the stress settles in, here are 3 easy steps to finding and buying the right engagement ring.

1. Go home before you buy.
If you think you have found the right ring, go home. While you are at home, think about the ring you are about to buy. Does the ring have the look you want? Will it fit your lifestyle?

Most people wear their engagement rings for life, so finding the right engagement ring shouldn't be a shopping trip taken lightly.

When you are at home thinking about your engagement ring, think about whether or not it fits your lifestyle. Are you always on the go or into sports? If so, you may not want a large solitaire with a high setting.

2. Ask around for references.
This goes for online and offline shopping. Do you know anyone who has bought from this jeweler or jewelry store? If not, find someone who has, and see what they thought about their transaction.

Honesty is usually the best policy, but on occasion, you will find dishonest people. That goes for all walks of life, and shopping for an engagement ring is no different. If the diamond or stone you are buying has a pretty price tag, you may want to get the values of the ring verified by a third party. You can have someone check the color, clarity, etc of the ring before you have made your purchase.

3. Make the deal.
Would you pay full sticker price for a car? Most people wouldn't. The same goes for engagement ring shopping. Most prices are negotiable, and you can usually haggle your way to a discount or upgrade.

Don't be afraid to ask if that is the best price, and how much of a discount they can give you.

Knowing these 3 easy steps before buying your engagement ring will help you find the right ring, get a good deal and be happy with your engagement ring for life!

Brandon Hopkins is the owner of Online Engagement Rings and has been writing about and buying rings for many years. He is available for speaking and writing opportunities and can be contacted through his website at http://www.online-engagement-rings.com.

The Gifts We Give Our Dogs

Carolyn Schweitzer

Whoever coined the phrase, "It's a Dog's Life" wasn't familiar with 21st century dogs. Time was when the average canine slept outside, ate whatever scraps of food were tossed his way, and if he was lucky, was thrown the occasional bone. He was even expected to earn his keep!
Times have changed. As the world has grown more affluent, so have our pets. We're obsessed with keeping our canine companions happy, healthy, and properly accessorized. So much so that many of us worry about our own welfare less than that of our dog. This didn't happen overnight-- the trend started decades ago.
Take, for example, my grandmother Rose. During the 60's and 70's, Rose and Henry discovered cruise vacations. On every cruise, whenever they pulled into port to "shop", Rosie made it her mission to find stray dogs and feed them. She'd head straight for the butcher, buy a few pounds of fresh meat, and comb the islands for the hungry and homeless. She would exclaim, "It's a crime the way these animals live!"-- in spite of the fact that the people of those islands were desperately poor!
Now, don't get me wrong. I'm not passing judgment on Grandma, or anyone else. I spoil my pets as much as the next guy or gal, and take immense pleasure in it. Truth be told, I'd rather hang out with my dog than with a whole lot of people I know. We share a special bond, my best friend and I. Hey, admit it... lots of you feel the same way!
The fact is, man has always had a close relationship with animals, and has enjoyed having pets around for companionship. Having a pet can bring great pleasure into our lives, and is believed to have a therapeutic effect on the owner. For empty nesters and those who've delayed or opted out of having kids, pets almost take the place of children. We bond with our pets especially because they don't judge us. Dogs in particular offer the kind of unconditional love we all crave. They're always thrilled to have us around!
So, how do we spoil our pets?
Probably in much the same way that we spoil our children! Aside from all of the care attention lavished on America's pets, a tremendous amount of money is spent providing goods and services that were once deemed a luxury-- but are now considered essential.
Today's dog sees the vet for regular checkups. She eats premium dog food and munches on gourmet doggie treats, is enrolled in obedience classes, and runs agility courses. She has her own collections of toys, clothing, and possibly even dog jewelry and canine cologne. She sleeps indoors on a luxury orthopedic bed and takes shelter outdoors in her cedar dog house. She wears a safety harness when riding in the family car, a reflective vest on hunting trips, and rain gear in foul weather. She can even dodge UV rays with a pair of doggie sunglasses. Her responsibilities are few.
I could go on (don't worry, at some point I will!). But one of the most notable signs that we regard our dogs as members of our family is the fact that we buy them gifts. A dog gift for the holidays, a dog gift for a special occasion, or a dog gift to show our appreciation for how much our dogs appreciate us. Any reason will do. Heck, we even wrap our dog gifts!
Here are some very interesting statistics regarding gifts for pets:

* More than half of U.S. households have pets, and many of them are including their "best friends" in holiday plans.
* According to a survey conducted by the Pet Supplies "Plus" chain, 97% of its customers will buy gifts for their animals this Yuletide season.
* 28% of owners will spend more on their pets than on their spouses when buying gifts.
* 47% will spend more on their pets than on relatives other than their spouse.
* 54% will spend more on their pets than on their in-laws.
* 83% will wrap their pets' gifts.
* 68% claim that their pets will unwrap presents themselves with their paws.
* 71% will buy something practical for them.

Buying gifts for our pets is only the half it. If someone we know is a pet lover, we often show our support by giving the person a pet-related gift. And, since the saying goes, "love me, love my dog", there's often pressure to throw in a little dog gift for Spike too. For a casual dog-loving aquaintance, our dog lover gift might be a simple coffee mug with a picture of their favorite dog breed. A set of plush doggie-themed golf club covers could make an amusing gift for a colleague. Maybe Aunt Janine has a collection of dog figurines we can add to. Or, at the other end of the spectrum, one could splurge on a diamond-studded doggie themed bracelet for the wife (although I wouldn't recommend this as an anniversary gift. Unless you're verrry sure.) and a new house for Spike.
The good news is, there's no shortage of goods and services to inspire even the most rabid of dog lovers and dog gift shoppers. And dog lover gift shoppers. Whether the names on your gift list are human or canine, you'll never run out of things to buy and places to shop. If you're one of those gifted gift givers who's never at a loss for what to get and where to find it I envy you. If you're more like the rest of us, and you need a little help, you'll find plenty of ideas online (Ahem!). You can also look for future articles in this series, in which I'll hone in on various ways you can pamper and reward the dogs and dog lovers in your life.
So go ahead, spoil your furry friends. Celebrate your love for your dog, and your sister in law's love for her dog. Shower them with goodies and gifts. It's a dog's life. And if I get to come back for another round, I want it to be as one of those lucky dogs!!

Are You An Amber Gal?
Sher Matsen

Amber is a beautiful gift from mother nature. It comes in many different colors - yellow, orange, red, white, brown, green, blue and almost black. It may be transparent or clouded. Transparent tones range from pale to dark yellow, to yellow light brown. Cloudy amber comes in many colors.
Amber is fossilized resin of ancient trees that grew in "amber forests". Through various physical and chemical changes the resin becomes Amber. Amber is unique because it is able to preserve the organic tissues in it. It is very common to find pieces of plants and insects, trapped in amber making it extremely valuable to both collectors and the scientists. A beautiful and fascinating gem!

Amber is found in various parts of the world. The largest amber deposits are off the shores of the Baltic Sea. Baltic Amber is the most sought after and valuable for making amber jewelry.
Baltic Amber has been used for decorative items since prehistoric times. A Baltic amber amulet has even been found in Egyptian tombs . Amber was also very popular in ancient Rome during the reign of Neron when: jewelry, ornaments, amulets, and even dice were made from amber. During the Middle Ages, amber prayer beads were exported. From the 16th century into the 18th century item made from amber included jewelry, dishes, buttons, pipe mouth pieces, chess sets and a host of other fine products.

The majority of Baltic amber comes from a 400-square-mile area - the Samland Peninsula, now known as the Kaliningrad region. The Kaliningrad amber mine supplies 99% of the Baltic amber. Up until the 19th century amber was retrieved manually from the sea. During the latter part of the 19th century operations became much more sophisticated as they began dredging and mining for amber. Since then millions of pounds of Baltic amber have been mined.. A small town in the Kaliningrad region has the world's largest amber mine.

Amber has a special beauty in its ability for each piece to be truly original in nature and content. The downfall to amber is like anything organic it does not last forever. Baltic amber is known to have the longest life expectancy. Taking proper care of your amber will result in enjoyment for many years, sometimes thousands of years as seen with the recovery of jewels from the past.
Some important tips for caring for your amber:

* Never store amber where it may rub against hard surfaces such as metal or other jewelry.

Whatever Happened to Proofreading?

Owen Johnson

One of the great things about the Internet is it has made us instant communicators, instant authors and instant ad copy writers. One of the WORST things about the Internet is it has made us instant communicators, instant authors and instant ad copy writers. Too many people just type an email and hit "send," including emails intended to sell us something. Or they build a nice looking web page, type their content and immediately go to their FTP program and upload it. They don't bother to read what they've written first.

We see the results of this daily: Email ads so poorly written we instantly delete them and web sites with so many typos we have no confidence in the business' abilities or integrity. In short, lost sales. (The author of a guide I recently read about spotting scams on the Web mentioned that some things they all seem to have in common are misused and misspelled words, misused or missing punctuation and typos-sloppy work.) I've seen web sites that seemed to be written by people whose first language was something other than English and the whole message was lost.

And here's one worth a chuckle-or a shake of the head: While reading an eBook telling me how to write one and stressing the importance of proofreading, I saw more typos and misused words and punctuation than I could count. Now, how much should I trust this man's advice? In fact, I've found that MOST eBooks telling us how to make money on the Internet are put together so haphazardly I'm becoming convinced there IS no way to make money using their methods. Anyone who throws together their information in such a hurry they don't even proofread it doesn't gain much credibility with me. And probably don't with you, either.

I've been told that this sloppiness doesn't matter much to the younger generations, from the "X-Generation" down, and that's apparent by the fact that they tend to be the ones who are most often guilty. But to the older generations it matters a great deal. Now, guess which age group is the fastest growing in terms of Internet use? Which one has the most money to spend? And which one actually spends the most on the Internet? It's the Baby Boom generation, those people 45 to 55. If you want us to buy from you or believe what you have to say, you'd better make sure your copy is well written.

It also pays to remember that your site design and your writing should be tailored to your targeted market. If you're selling nose rings, use wild backgrounds and slang. But if you're selling fine jewelry, keep it simple, clean and easy to navigate and stay away from the slang. Otherwise, you'd better carry lots of nose rings!

After you've written your sales letter or web content, read it through. (To save yourself some time, you can use a text editor with spell check, and paste it into whatever program you're using.) Then send it to someone else to check it-someone in the same age group as your target market or a professional editor. If it's a sales letter, send the 'finished' product to yourself first to make sure the formatting came out right.

After you've done that and uploaded your pages to your server, do it again. I hope you're going to check your links, anyway, to make sure THEY work. So you might as well check everything else, too. Send the URL to a few friends with different computers and different browsers to see that it looks as good on theirs as it does on yours.

A little time spent assuring it's right will make a huge difference in your site's traffic, and probably in your bank account, too.

Finding The Best Display Case For Your Treasures
Antigone Arthur

Finding The Best Display Case For Your Treasures

Maybe you have a bunch of collectibles sitting in your closet gathering dust. Or perhaps you've been storing your fine China in the kitchen cupboards instead of a hutch. Far too often we sequester our prized possessions rather than place them where they deserve to be... on display.

Finding a good display case and setting it up is probably a lot easier than you think it might be. Yes, there are many display cases to choose from. Occasionally you may have a need for a specialty case. Fortunately there are some easy steps to follow to find the right case to show off your treasures.

Finding The Right Case

If you truly want to show off your valuables, first you have to find the right case. There are certain circumstances that warrant a specialty case. If you aren't sure if you need a specialty case, here are some examples of cases that will help you decide:

  • Die cast car display cases

  • Flag display cases (military flag burial cases)

  • Football jersey display cases (and other sports memorabilia)

  • Jewelry display cases

  • Sword display cases (and knife cases)

  • Commercial pet display cases

If your prized possessions don't fit into any of the above categories, chances are you can get away with ordinary wooden display cases. This is good news because there are dozens to choose from. Even if you need a specialty case rest assured you are bound to find the right one to meet your needs.

Before deciding the right display case you first have to decide what exactly you want to display. Some people prefer displaying coins and other similar collections, while others want to show off their favorite jersey or an award from some memorable event. Keep in mind there are display cases large and small to accommodate each of these needs.

Once you decide what you want to display, figure out how much of it you have. This will help you decide the size of the case you need. If you want to show off your coin collection and have more than 100 coins, you'll need a larger case than a standard size small display. Keep this in mind when shopping.

When picking your display case, also keep in mind where you plan to display your treasures. You'll want to place them in a prominent place, but likely you don't want to waste too much room overall. Fortunately you can select an elegant yet compact case many times to suit your needs.

When looking at display cases, you should have in mind how many shelves, hooks, mirrors or other accessories you'll need to showcase your items. A mirror is always a great bonus because it can reflect your treasured collectibles within.

You should review several different models of display case before you decide the one that is best for you. Keep in mind when selecting your display case you will likely also need many accessories. Some of the more common accessories include anchoring wax, polish, self-adhesives and stick on feet. If you plan to hang your china you will need the proper hooks to do so. You also want to be sure to select a case that is sturdy. A sturdy case will last a lifetime.

Display Your Items Correctly

Once you decide the right type of case you'll want to display your items correctly. You want your collectibles to look great and put a smile on your face. Whether an expert or novice, you can do this following a few easy steps.

First, group your collectibles together. Next, be sure you place small objects together. Remember that when it comes to a display, less is more. The more items you try to jam pack in your display, the more distracted the onlooker will be. Try to select a few key pieces or even one piece to highlight if you can. This piece can form the center of your display. Then, if you choose, you can surround this object with others.

Remember, your display should reflect a little of your personality as well. Have fun when creating your display. Pick and choose accessories as you see fit. And remember, you can always change things around to spice them up over time!

What is Dowsing?

Samantha Stevens

Dowsing is definitely an intuitive art and one of the oldest forms of divination in the world. Perhaps the oldest and most familiar image we have a dowser is what is called a field or map dowser. This person walks over a landscape using a Y shaped or forked stick (sometimes called a doodlebug) to locate subterranean sources of water, oil or even precious minerals. The stick vibrates, crosses or shakes when the substance is found. Some dowsers will use two sticks held in one hand, and when the sticks cross, it signifies that a subtle astral or geopathic force has located the natural resource. This kind of dowsing is also used to locate things such as buried treasure, lost persons, missing jewelry and stray golf balls!
However, the kind of dowsing we are concerned with in this article would be for the purposes of divination. To do this you need to purchase or make what is called a "bobber" or a "pendulum". This is simply a pointed object made of metal, crystal or wood that is attached to the end of a string or a rope. Crystals make excellent pendulums. To diagnose disease, use a rose quartz crystal. For general divination, a silver, lapis, wood or hematite pendulum works well. A pendulum can be anything that appeals to you, that is personal, feels like it conducts energy and can be hung from a chain or string. For instance, I have a little silver acorn charm that works perfectly as a pendulum. Some people use keys or talismans or charms such as a crucifix or ankh. Pendulums can be bought commercially online and in New Age or Occult Stores.
There are no strict rules around the practice of dowsing, however there are two methodologies behind the purpose of it.
The first methodology involves using the pendulum to answer a yes or no question. Some practitioners use a chart or a map, usually a square of paper with a circle drawn on it with the words YES or NO written at the four quarter points of the circle.
Sometimes, a direct answer can be written on the four points of the paper as well. For instance if the question is "Who does Bob love?" then you may have different options such as "Me", "His Wife", "His Child" or "Nobody" written on the four quarter points of the circle. The dowser holds the pendulum over the center of the circle concentrates and sees which answer the pendulum naturally sways towards.
There is also another direct method of getting a yes or no answer. Hold the pendulum straight between thumb and forefinger. Ask the question. If it sways to the right, the answer is YES. If it sways to the left, the answer is NO. If it goes in a clockwise circle, the answer is YES: a counterclockwise circle - NO.
Healers, to scan a body for disease, also use pendulums. The spinning in a counterclockwise circle is said to be an astral message that something is wrong with that part of a body. Also if the pendulum is just very active it can indicate an energy disturbance in a chakra or an imbalance of some kind. There is an old wives' tale too, that if a pendulum is held over the belly of a pregnant woman, it is a boy if it swings to the right or clockwise and a girl if it swings to the left or counterclockwise.
Before you start dowsing, you might want to say a little prayer, asking God or the powers that be for permission to dowse.
A Dowser's Prayer from Samantha:
Dear God (Or Higher Power) Please help me be centered and grounded so that I may become a clear channel of your divine grace, direction and wisdom. Protect me from all negative energies and influences while I open myself up to do they work and guide me to finding the right answers for all those who come to me for advice and help. Amen.

Wonderful White Gold Wedding Rings
Donna Monday

The elegant and sophisticated look of glittering, gleaming gold. There's nothing quite like it.

Some people never grow tired of the look of pure gold jewelry. Gold, being our most precious metal, is often a first choice among couples looking for that perfect gold wedding ring.

While yellow gold remains very popular with the wedding crowd. Many people prefer the brilliant hue of a white gold wedding ring.

White gold will look beautiful on you whether you're a man or a woman. You can find online a great selection of white gold diamond wedding rings and white gold wedding ring sets. Also, if you're looking for something a little fancier that can also become a piece of wonderful keepsake jewelry, white gold makes a very elegant engraved wedding ring that can be passed on to future generations.

The one thing you need to be aware of when buying a white gold wedding ring is that it will need periodic maintenance in order to keep it's luster.

To obtain it's much desired glittering white color, white gold is coated with another alloy called Rhodium (the natural color of white gold is really light gray). Rhodium will wear down after a while, so to maintain your ring's luster, you'll need to visit your local jeweler about every 12-18 months and have it re-plated with a new coating of Rhodium. The cost for this should be very reasonable.

Whether you're looking for a plain gold wedding band, or a wedding ring with sparkling diamonds, white gold is an excellent choice for those looking for something a little extra special.

How to Start an eBay Business

John Evans

With the phenomenal success of online auction website eBay,
there is no surprise when it is revealed a record number of
individuals are flooding the popular website with upstart
businesses. The ease of use and huge client base allows
anyone interested in becoming an entrepreneur to start
their own eBay business. Anyone who has ever wanted to
become an entrepreneur and work for themselves has an
excellent opportunity to do so on the World Wide Web.
Instead of having phenomenally high start-up costs, you can
develop a highly functional business for an extremely
minimal cost. If you are wondering how to start an eBay
business, look no further than the online auction’s website
to help you with detailed step-by-step instructions for
starting your own ebay auction business.

Regardless what you choose to sell on eBay, there is a
buyer out there! It may be strange someone would want your
1970s harvest gold canister set, but fear not—there is an
individual somewhere in the world who has been earnestly
seeking your retro chic item for the perfect addition to
their kitchen. If you have a particular passion or hobby,
think of translating it into a business. Maybe you
hand-knit cool caps or create jamming jewelry. Unique and
one of a kind creations are quite popular with eBay buyers
who are seeking that perfect item for themselves or a loved
one. Undoubtedly the most popular genre of items on eBay
is antiques. If your passion is collecting items from days
gone by, consider turning it into a viable income by
developing an eBay business. Instead of renting a space in
an antique mall or renting a tradition brick and mortar
storefront, you can save money by settling your business on
eBay. Additionally, you can work around your
responsibilities and life in general to create a
specialized schedule that fits into your lifestyle using
your home as a base. You will save a great deal of money
by working from home as opposed to a traditional job when
you factor in the commuting costs, including gas and car
maintenance, costs for your business wardrobe, and other
daily items, including childcare and food expenses.

When choosing what items to put up for auction on eBay,
keep in mind all items must be shipped to the buyer. For
this reason, you should elect to put easily-shipped items
up for sale. Additionally, you will need to make sure you
have the proper shipping materials available to ensure the
items arrive in the same condition they left in. The
United States Postal Service will ship Priority Mail boxes
directly to individuals who order off their website. The
Priority Mail system enables sellers to mail auction items
in a special box that is included into the price of the
shipping. The newest addition to this class of boxes
include a flat rate box, which allows the contents to be
shipped at one low fee regardless of weight. All items
must fit easily into the box for this rate to apply.
Whatever your choice for shipping agency, ensuring your
items can be mailed cheaply and easily, will result in more
of your items successfully selling at auction.

Finally, when you start your eBay business, take great care
in deciding what type of items you wish to sell. Creating
a special niche just for your items will encourage buyers
to become repeat customers. Providing your website with a
professional image that best displays your goods is
essential to the lifespan of your eBay business. It has
been proven people are most likely to purchase items from
individuals with professional-looking websites, as they
best promote competency and reliability. In this theme,
your user rating will play a great part in the success of
your eBay business. For each successful auction
transaction, the buyer will provide feedback noting your
services. Businesses with high amounts of positive
feedback will gain the highest number of customers.

Summer Fashion Fun For The Beach
Sher Matsen

Look Good & Have Fun This Summer With The Perfect Beach Wardrobe

It's that time of year when we pack up our bags and head to the beach for the day to enjoy those warm sunrays and the refreshing sound of the lapping water.

So what constitutes a good beach wardrobe. Well there are certain essentials that none of us forget. On goes the swimsuit and bathing suit cover, flip flops on our feet. Beach bag has been packed with the essentials - sunglasses, floppy hat, towel and a good book. Great - got the basics covered but what about the rest.

So if we are so prepared for a day at the beach, why is it by the time we get home we look pretty worn. Here are some helpful tips to make your day at the beach fun and keep you looking fashion fresh all day and all the way home.

First before you leave home, if you've got long hair pull it into a high pony tail or fun knot. Use some funky hair accessories that will stay in place when you're swimming. Try a fun colored bobble or some firm fastening clips in bright summer colors. If you pull your hair up your neck will stay cool and you'll look fresh all day with your neat hairdo.

Second slather yourself in sunscreen before leaving the house, then toss the sunscreen in your bag so you can reapply after a swim or every few hours. A sunburn is not only unhealthy and painful, it's unattractive, so don't let yourself turn into the lobster of the day. Your sunscreen should be a SPF of 15. It doesn't hurt to use a strong SPF on your face or your entire body if you burn easily.

Your beach bag should be large enough to hold your supplies for the day. Why not get something fun and fashionable to keep you looking fashion fresh. Make sure you've got all the daily essentials in your bag - sunglasses, sunscreen, a good book, a floppy hat, some lip gloss, and any other makeup touch ups you'll want. If you plan to wear eye makeup make sure it's waterproof. Stay away from heavy foundations. If you must apply something use a bronzer moisturizer. It's also a good idea to bring lip balm with an SPF15 to protect your lips. It never hurts to put some moisturizer in the bag. Include a snack and plenty of fluids. It's important not to get dehydrated.

Okay great we've got the basics covered now what about the wardrobe basics? If you're planning to wear a swimsuit it's usually easiest to put it on at home, that way you're not chasing down change rooms. So great - first on goes the swimsuit. Now what to wear for a cover? Well you've got plenty of choices. A tank top and shorts, tank and skort, or a nice light cotton dress all work well over top. Choose something that's easy to put on and take off, and choose fabrics that breathe to keep you cool. I also suggest including a long sleeved cotton blouse just incase you start to burn you can protect your shoulders and arms.

If you're planning on heading out later in the day without returning home you might want to toss a pair of jeans or long skirt into your bag. If your outing is going to extend into the evening you'll want to include a sweater for the cooler evening air. If you're worried about your evening wear getting sandy or wet at the beach, then place them in a separate bag and leave them in the trunk of your car. That way you are guaranteed they'll remain fresh.

My favorite beach look is this. And what's perfect is it keeps me looking fashion fresh throughout the day and takes me right into the evening. First I like a swimsuit that's got lots of support and is bright and cheerful. I throw a fitted tank on top and throw on a loose flouncy long skirt. The long skirt serves me through the evening and also works great to cover up if I'm starting to burn. I choose a lightweight material in a darker color with a pattern that accents the colors in my swimsuit. Flip flops are my footwear. Depending on where I'm heading after the beach I choose either a basic pair or one of my funky pair with rhinestones or crystals. Easy to walk in, feet breath, and terrific for an evening out. I keep a fitted light weight sweater in my car, and take a long sleeved cotton blouse down to the beach. I usually choose a long sleeved and long length blouse because it's versatile. I can knot it to create a short blouse, wear it long as a beach cover, and put it on if I start to burn on my upper body. I usually choose white or a soft pastel depending on my other colors. I like white because it's cool to wear and refreshing to look at. Every year I buy a fun new beach tote that's big enough for the beach but not too big as to take it with me for an evening out. I like a fun bag that's full of character.

Since I always feel naked without my jewelry I wear fashion jewelry to the beach. That way should I loose something I won't be out a lot of money and I won't feel so bad. I like to keep the earrings simple and elegant. I may or may not wear a necklace. Often I'll toss a funky wood necklace in the bag to add to the evening outfit. I like to wear a couple of fashion rings just to add the finishing touches. Now if you're fussy about tan lines you'll probably want to forgo the rings. I toss my watch in the bottom of my bag so I can put it on later.

That's it - simple is the key. Keep your beach wardrobe choices simple but fashionable. Think ahead so you can go from beach to an evening out without hassle. Remember to always make your fashion statement!

Hot or Not -- Trends for Prom 2004

Blake Kritzberg

Prom: it's loaded with expectations. For some, it's merely a dance. For others, it means that first great step into adulthood, while savoring one's position at the top of the grammar-school food chain. And for some, it means a night of pure Cinderella magic. Combine all this with a youth-oriented culture, and you have an event that demands a serious fashion plan.

So what fashion forces are driving Prom 2004? The answers are: curves, glamour and loads of color.

"Prom 2004" is actually a bit of a misnomer, as most dresses tend to follow Fall 2003 styles. This make sense: prom dresses are high-ticket items, and retailers need a chance to test out trends in the shopping malls. (Hair is more adaptable, so prom hair is more attuned to the present).

As for fashion in general, it's still reeling from the ultimate anti-fashion incident: the 9/11 attack. You may recall that the industry stopped in its tracks. Major fashion shows were cancelled, or scaled down to a roomful of attendees on folding chairs. "Can fashion still matter?" was the question no one could ignore.

But of course, fashion didn't die. As always, it reflected the newly-altered world view. "World views" contain many interlocking strands, as does fashion, but strong themes emerged and are still in play. Here are some of the best-articulated trends in Prom 2004:

// The Solidarity Uniform

Dressy, formal looks from the 30s and 60s. Think Hollywood glamour, and Jacquie Kennedy. Beneath this trend is the new focus on attending family events and dressing up for them.

Expressing the 30s are the curvy, Screen Siren prom gowns: smoky mermaids in luxurious ruched satin, and Latin-style ruffles and trains.

Reviving the 60s are Grace Kelly/Jacquie-O A-line skirts, sometimes tea-length, with crinoline slips. These classic beauties are updated with simpler, more natural hair and makeup, not to mention some mod-style colors (bold black and white, bright red, or submarine yellow). Gloves and a small shiny pocketbook are must-haves, but for 2004, you don't have to stick to ordinary colors!

Timeless prom queen gowns are fully *au courant* as well -- no amount of beading, boning, crinoline or shine is over-the-top, so enjoy the license for glamour. Perhaps this is the right year to indulge in a delicate tiara!

You'll be surprised by the number of strapless gowns on offer. Every one of these "solidarity" gowns lend themselves to classic strapless glamour.

// The Eastern Bloc
Fashion influence is drifting, and the East is gaining ground: Londoners do their best to dress like Persians, and Bollywood antics make the global radar more often. You'll see the lovely outcome in those 2004 prom offerings with an elegant sari look and extraordinary hand beading.

// Sporty Spice
J. Lo lives on in the sporty side of Prom 2004, where two-piece gowns (some midriff-bearing) continue to make a splash. This look is not only fresh but practical; those beautiful bodices can be paired with jeans long after prom night's become a matchbook and a memory. "Sporty-prom" fashionistas can augment their costume with sparkling navel gems and exotic paint-on body tattoos.

// Celebrity Fashion
Can it go any lower? The prom world's not immune from red carpet antics, and several sultry 2004 offerings call for double-sided tape. This year's 'necklines' sometimes plunge so far that there's nowhere else to go; look for 'backdrift' to follow (no pun intended) in the next few years.

// In Truth, 2004
The dresses genuinely in sync with 2004 runways are the ultra-feminine pastels, with delicate ruffles. Think "prom dress meets the park." Don't be afraid to go with soft green, coral and pink paeons to girlhood, simply because most offerings are jewel-toned and sizzlingly seductive.

// Hair
Soft, shiny waves are new for spring (think lovely Charlize Theron at the Golden Globes); Aniston-straight is out. Whatever you do, don't torture your hair into some unnatural confection; it's simplicity and naturalness that updates these retrospective looks.

// Shoes
Clunky is dead. Open-toed stilettos are red-hot. Sure, the gorgeous silver (or transparent) sky-high creations on the market are the ultimate in impracticality. The romantic prom-goer will buy them anyway, get a great pedicure, and slip them off halfway through the night for a 'best of both worlds' (if not 'best for the pocketbook') experience.

// Jewelry and Makeup
With all those strapless fashions, take care not to over-accessorize. Unless you're going for a vintage look, don't spoil that beautiful expanse of clavicle with a necklace; don sparkly, dangling earrings instead to create a long line. If the Nicole Kidman look is more to your taste, consider one of those retro multi-strand chokers (in black, of course), or a slim black ribbon paired with a silk rose. Chandelier earrings might be "outre" at the Oscars, but they're definitely not a done deal at Prom 2004.

Jewelry Christmas Gifts That Sparkle and Shine
Sam Serio

The joyous season of Christmas is steeped in tradition, and gift giving is one ritual that is inseparable from this holiday. Who hasn't had difficulty at one time or another in choosing a suitable present for a beloved family member or a dear friend? Fortunately, jewelry Christmas gifts are widely available and there is an endless variety of styles from which to choose. Twinkling and shining, they reflect the nature of that season to be jolly.

Sparkling and glittering are two words that would describe diamonds. Browse through the World Wide Web and you'll see a plethora of online stores that showcase jewelry Christmas gifts. Imagine a woman's pleasure at the shimmering sight of diamond snowflake dangling earrings or a glittering diamond bracelet adorned with traditional symbols associated with Christmas. Men, on the other hand, will surely appreciate flashing yet tasteful diamond cuff links. Other gemstones make wonderful jewelry Christmas gifts. Sapphires or rubies set in gold, sterling silver or platinum will gleam subtly from rings or necklaces.

Not all jewelry Christmas gifts that glitter need to be expensive, though. Whimsical and unique designs at an affordable price for the holiday season abound. For instance, brightly colored, rhinestone encrusted pins shaped like Christmas trees are widely available. For young recipients, bracelets, necklaces or anklets made from gold- or silver-plated metals, engraved with their names for a personal touch, will fit snugly in any Christmas stocking. Stores or web sites that specialize in vintage and antique items also offer bright jewelry Christmas gifts. Take your pick from pieces such as brilliant poinsettia-shaped hairpins or nativity-inspired pendants dotted with Swarovski crystals.

For many centuries, men, women and children have been eagerly counting the days until Christmas morning, when everyone would rush to the Christmas tree to open their presents. The giving of gifts is a time honored tradition, and the selection of presents that will be appreciated and enjoyed by those whom we love is no trivial task. Scintillating jewelry Christmas gifts have always been part of that tradition and they continue to contribute to the glow that the holiday season brings.
